Combo-Ten is an engaging mathematics game similar to dominoes. The set of Combo-Ten pieces provided are designed to facilitate thinking in tens and understanding even and odd numbers. Notice that the dots are arranged in two columns. If the two columns are the same, the number is even. If they are not the same, the number is odd. With the dots arranged in two columns, students can see how two numbers "fit" to make a ten (two rows of five). The normal rules for dominoes can be used with a Combo-Ten set and would be good to use before playing Combo-Ten. 
 
The classroom set comes in five colors so that the five sets can be kept separate. The pieces are made of soft, durable rubber-like material and thus will be quiet when in use (even if the kid's aren't).

Where's the Mathematics?

A major goal of early school mathematics is thinking in tens. Number sense is founded on a good knowledge of tens and the role they play in our numbers system. Yet, many conventional texts continue to emphasize procedures that lack meaning for young minds. Rather than naming the digit in the tens place, it is much more fruitful to encourage students to look for combinations of ten. Forming the intention of making tens is a singular factor in mental arithmetic. For example, adding 16 and 14 is almost instantaneous when looking for combinations of ten. In fact, it is not necessary for students to memorize addition facts with sums from ten to twenty since all can be determined by making tens. 8 + 5 is 13 because 8 + 2 +3. Number sense, a central goal, is based on thinking in tens. Combo-Ten is a game that builds mathematical competency by presenting opportunities for students to think in tens. It is also an enjoyable game for adults.
