Ten Frame Pairs: Card Game

Students construct mental images for the numbers one through ten rather than relying on counting. The ten frame allows students to reference numbers to the benchmark number ten. This begins the thinking in tens process. For example, if there are nine dots on a card, a student might reason,"Nine, because there is one missing." With the variations in the arrangements of dots, students generalize their concept of number.
